What financial tracking software do those of you who are in the UK use? I finally got round to checking out mint to discover it's US only. Life has got more complicated recently, and I really am going to need some way to keep track of things, but googling just leads me round in circles of bad reviews of pretty much everything I can find. Help?

Monday at work was a no good, very bad day. I've always loved my job, it pays so little that I am back living with my parents but I considered that a reasonable trade for a job that I enjoy so much, where I am treated with respect. That all came crashing down on monday, and now I am looking for a way out.

I am impressed though, six months ago this situation would have left me a ball of depression unable to function for a fortnight, before I just gave up and accepted that my life would be shit. Now, I was sad monday but by the time I went to bed I was excited about the possibilities I could see for the future, and couldn't wait to get on with it. That's a hell of a change. I must be doing something right.

For the last six months or so I have been doing a lot of reading around minimalism and digital nomadism - the idea being that if you don't want or have much stuff you are free to work from where-ever you are. Most of the blogs I read are implementing this by living on the road, or on a beach in indonesia, but if I could manage it it would mean I wasn't tied to living near somewhere I can find work - I would be free to find myself a little cottage somewhere and as long as it had an internet connection I could be anywhere.

One of the blogs I have really enjoyed is Ash Ambirge's Middle Finger Project. She has written a book called 'You don't need a job, you need guts: Combining Passion + Self + Business Through Digital Entrepreneurship' and it's out today. I am very excited. I already know that her writing is informative and engaging, and from the previews the content looks like it'll take me where I want to go.

"You Don't Need a Job is targeted at beginners who are interested in digital entrepreneurship, but do not have a web presence yet, are just getting their web presence off the ground, or have a web presence, but an ineffective one.

The book teaches philosophy, guides readers on what kind of digital business to start based on their interests, teaches the principles of running a business online that's based around them, and then goes step-by-step through the process, including tools, tips, tricks & the various ways to finally start making MONEY. Finally, the book ends with my own story."

Sounds like just what I need.

As part of trying to sort my life out I have been doing a lot of reading around minimalism and lifestyle design, trying to remake myself.
I bought a bunch of e-books that are being sold as a package until tomorrow in Karol Gajda's Minimalist book sale - 17 minimalist e-books by some great authors for $27 (bought separately they'd cost $224.54)- and as a bonus he just added his How To Live Anywhere, Work From Your Laptop, and Enjoy Ridiculously Extraordinary Freedom course which is worth $77 on it's own.
I have only just started reading - it'll take me days to get through all the books, but there's some amazing advice there - if it's something you're interested in I've never seen a better offer so get it quick - the offer expires 10am Eastern this Thursday, October 7 (that's 3pm Thursday GMT).
falling is fun too
That surfing trip I took was amazing. I expected it to be challenging, phsyically because I have only been active for a couple of months and mentally because the whole thing (going abroad, living in a tent, being with a group of people I don't know 24/7) was so far outside my comfort zone. I expected to be rubbish at it. What I never expected was that it would be so much fun.

And this post got long, so I cut. Read more... )

After my finances went horribly wrong earlier in the year, meaning I couldn't manage camp sparkle, I have been working away at paying everything off and have got them back into order.

I had some sort of epiphany about the state of myself - had a vision of myself in twenty years if I carry on like this (home > work > home where home = sitting in front of the tv) and it wasn't pretty, so I have been working hard on self improvement. Getting more physically active and trying to figure out how I can build a life that I might enjoy.

On the physical side I joined a gym in July, and as motivation booked myself a week in France learning to surf. I leave next wednesday. I have been working out regularly and am in much better shape than I was, but it's only been six weeks and I am still pretty unfit and overweight.

I am completely overwhelmed with how much I still have left to do before I go, and terrified about practically every aspect of it. Getting out of my comfort zone and doing something that scares me is a big part of why I decided to do it, but oh, the fear I am feeling right now isn't fun. Plus it is costing me way more than I am comfortable spending on myself - it feels so frivolous, but that's good for me to feel too I guess.

I joined the exercise everyday community here on dw, and their support has been amazing - I am now doing at least a little yoga every day, working the 100 pushups, 200 situps and 200 squats programs and going to the gym 3 times a week - one of which is an hour with a personal trainer.

I am hoping that this trip will help in multiple ways - just getting out of my routine should help, plus being outdoors all day every day is very different for me. I only leave the house when I absolutely have to - sometimes not even then. I am hoping I will come back smoking less and sleeping more, having been brave and had fun, with a better idea of who I am without the routines to lean on. There must be a person somewhere under all this avoidance of life.

new who

I am ridiculously excited about the new season of Doctor Who starting on Saturday. I am going to huddle on the sofa under a blanket, eat crumpets and be transported.
To get you in the Who mood, check out this tale I found on one of the space blogs I read, it's pitch perfect.

Since Christmas I have been frantically trying to finish up the brown and cream hexagon quilt I am making for my sister. Well, it's for me to use when I go up there as I have to sleep on their sofa and a single duvet is a bit big. We went up for my niece's birthday a couple of weeks ago and I had hoped to have it finished to take up then, but I came down with the worst cold I have had for a very long time the week before and just couldn't get it done. All it needs is the binding to be added, but I am leaving the edges uneven and just can't do it on the machine, so I have decided to hand sew that too. Now the deadline is passed though, I am not feeling the urgency - the next time we are going up is June when my new niece or nephew is due, so I have plenty of time to get it done by then.

I am really enjoying the hand sewing process though, and my copy of Alabama Studio Style arrived with a free yard of gorgeous fabric, so I want to get started on a tank top from that.

I also decided that this is the year I figure out the FBA and make myself some clothes - specifically shirts.

I have some big old mens plaid flannel shirts that I bought second hand to make a quilt out of, but keep wearing instead, they are just so comfy. The blue and green one I am wearing today especially seems to go with everything I own, so once I figure out a shirt pattern I am going to de and reconstruct it.
I got Cal Patch's Design it yourself clothes book for Christmas, and took all my measurements last weekend, so I am all set to start.

There's also the Sheerwater kaftan pattern from Make it perfect - I think I am going to make that in some Heather Ross Far far away that I have been saving once I find the pattern to buy.

There's a big girls blouse sew-along for march, so I am going to join in with that, once I find it again in my google reader, and finally learn to make shirts that fit me.

When I turned my computer on this evening it whirred briefly like everything was normal then just stopped.
I have taken bits out, done everything I can think of, no joy. Will consult liz at work in the morning - she knows about pc repairs.
It might finally be time for a new computer.

I'm thinking it might be time to try a netbook. I really don't have room for the big old desktop, so if it does need replacing something smaller would be sensible. And I can always hook a netbook up to a monitor I presume?

I would want a decent battery life, solid state harddrive and something tough if I am going to carry it about. Does anyone have any recommendations? advice? brands to avoid?

Way back when the sun came out for a minute, I promised to make my mum a sun hat. Then it went away and we forgot all about it until I realised that she is going abroad in September and it'll be sunny there at least. She chose Amy Butler's Blue Sky hat in Lila Tueller's Woodland Bloom Colossal cloud with the rosewood windswept for the lining.

I think it turned out pretty well. )

There was plenty of fabric left over, so I just finished making Oh Fransson's Margaret Sling Bag for her from the leftovers and some pink linen that I had in my stash. I hope she likes it.

I made it reversible. )

Yesterday I went into Lewes and bought the last of the fabric I need to do the Oh Fransson mod sampler quilt along. I bought enough so that there'd be plenty left over - I want to hand piece a hexagon quilt this winter in the same fabrics. The brown and cream hexs are going to be a quilt to use when I go up to my sisters. I recently found the most fabulous shop - The Patchwork Dog & Basket is an actual quilt fabric shop, and the staff there are so friendly and helpful plus their fabric selection is fantastic. I went out on the bus and it's a nice drive out, only takes half an hour, I will be going back.

I think it's going to be fabulous. )

quilts

cooking and cleaning are for people who haven't discovered quilting
I am collecting links here to various quilt patterns and tutorials that I want to make.

It might be a good idea to follow the mod sampler quilt along first.

  • I have the sudden mad urge to hand sew a hexagon quilt. I am going to use t he same yellow, orange, red and green fabrics that I am going to buy on Saturday for the mod sampler quilt along. Going up to london fabric shopping. Last night I started sewing a brown and cream one for Kat that I have started in a couple of lightweight cottons left over from Alex's quilt.

  • First up is the Crazy Old Ladies' Whimsey Playground quilt. Their version is made with Soiree by Lila Tueller for moda. I want to use that first to figure out how it all works, then I fancy making a version for myself with green and white prints, maybe some yellow in there too. I also have to find a child to give the first one to - I think it's a bit old for Chloe - maybe Victoria's eldest would like it? Or Chris' daughter.

  • These two quilts made with Laura Gunn's Lantern Bloom are fabulous, I love this fabric and both quilts look do-able. I can't decide which I prefer so I think I'll make both. Actually, I think I prefer something like this (and just bought a fat quarter set to make it with).

  • Oh Fransson's Clothesline quilt looks fun, and I already have a half dozen or so old flannel shirts that I bought with the intention of turning them into a quilt. This might be the project that they've been waiting for.

I've been looking at mini quilts lately - I couldn't see the point and then I saw this.
  • I embroider so i don't kill people
Jen took a picture of the cushion covers I made for her on their cushions. I think they look great. I love her blanket.

Next I need to make a cushion for Ericka.

We were talking about owl fabrics; I have these and she asked for a cushion.

    owls on purple

    owls on green

    owls on pink

I quite fancy trying to make something like Oh Franson's owl blocks, using the greens and oranges from Jens patchwork cushion.

ETA: I think we have decided on a patchwork of crazy log cabin blocks like the one in the third picture here. Now I really wish I'd kept more up to date with my OU course because all I want to do is get started on this cushion, but I have an assessment due in a fortnight and I haven't even looked at the books since the last one, so that has to be done first.

    bags

I have given up on trying to find the perfect bag and am going to try to make my own. Since I am also trying to cycle more, in the hope of swapping my bus commute for the bike, I might try and make one that works as a pannier - I need to research them as I've never looked closely at one.

It also occured to me today that I could be making bags for my mum and friends.

So I am collecting links here to various patterns and tutorials that I have seen lately.

  • My favourite so far is Oh Fransson's Margaret Sling Bag. Her April bag is cute too. Made one for mum

  • Amy Butler has a variety of bag patterns.

  • The Anna Maria Horner Multi Tasker tote is also popular.

  • I just discovered Indygo Junction who have a lot of bag patterns, I particularly like their Grommet Grab Bag, Matilda and Blanche Bags. And they have a nice messenger bag pattern.

  • Pozie gets cozy has the Tanglewood and Jane Market Bags.

  • Kerry at work made this travel bag from this pattern
  • .

  • Made by Rae has shared her Buttercup Bag pattern for free. Then people have shared their amendments to it.

  • Also Lazy Girl Designs Claire Handbag is cute.
  • to do

I am going to keep a list of all the projects in my to do list.

    For me
  • make this sunhat, just in case the sun comes out again this summer. Also Amy Butler's Blue Sky hat for mum, and maybe this while I'm at it. Oh, and this as soon as the pattern is done.

  • weekend sewing shirt from red muslim, modified

  • make a bag - finish planning it, buy the oilcloth and lining fabrics

  • Make the Whimsey Playground quilt, first in Soiree as pictured, then a green and white version for myself.

  • make the corset, bunny and quilt for starters from the Alabama Stitch book that arrived today (21-07-09). Must start collecting old t-shirts for these.

  • For others
  • Jen wants a patchwork cushion

  • Ericka wants a cushion using owl fabric

  • Ewen wants a quillow

  • Dan wants a beanbag He's gone of the idea

  • make as many of these zipper critters as I can manage from the fabric sample book dad bought home. Just as soon as I remember to buy some zips. I want one, I think Liz'd like one, and I have promised at least one for Chloe.
  • yoga pose
I think I'm going to use this journal to keep track of my sewing projects. It has gotten to the point where I am making enough that I am going to want a proper record of what I have made and for whom. I am going to copy over the posts I have made so far elsewhere, add the ones I've missed, and try to keep this up to date.

I finished Jen's cushion cover yesterday and delivered it today. I will post that one as soon as she sends me a picture of it on the cushion.

I have the house to myself for the long weekend, and a big list of things that I want to get done. )
The big question today though is this: Doctor Who tonight is on at 6.45, Primeval is on 6.15 - 7.15. Which do I watch live? Should have been Primeval.

I was in Fabricland the other day and noticed a great spring green fake fur behind the counter. I couldn't stop thinking about what a great cushion it'd make and ended up going back to get some. I also got some of a darker green they had, and now have two new cushions.

My cushion pile now looks like this.

I feel bad because my old one is amazing - sat in a cupboard for 30 years and started back up no problem, but it only does a straight stitch.

So I went researching machines on saturday and they had one in my local sewing machine shop that does button holes, zig zags, various stretch stiches and it overlocks, all for £130.

They didn't have many of them and it seemed like too good a bargain to pass up.

It's not as pretty as the old one, but it doesn't weigh a quarter as much.

Bank holiday weekend, some purple muslin, the shirt pattern from Heather Ross's new book - let's see if I can do this.

    Dad apron

After watching me making aprons for Kat and Chloe, my dad asked if I could make him one to, to wear for gardening and diy. 'No embroidery though' was his request, but I couldn't help myself. I remembered these.

I had to give him an iou for christmas, but this was done before the end of Jan.

    Very manly embroidery I feel.

My sister likes to bake, and my neice likes to help. She is not quite two, so by helping I mean throw flour around!

So Kat asked me to make them matching aprons. I am needing a new embroidery project, so I decided to embroider them.

I used the Krazy Kitchen patterns from Sublime Stitching.

They took ages, but I am pretty happy with the way they turned out. And by ages I mean, I finished Chloes on Christmas Eve on Kats sewing machine! It was pretty nice actually - her husband was out and our parents took the baby to the farm, so we spent a lovely afternoon - me embroidering and her in the kitchen. Very domestic scene.
